Vortex Mixer

A vortex mixer, or vortexer, is a simple device used commonly in laboratories to mix small vials of liquid. It consists of an electric motor with the drive shaft oriented vertically and attached to a cupped rubber piece mounted slightly off-center. As the motor runs the rubber piece oscillates rapidly in a circular motion. When a test tube or other appropriate container is pressed into the rubber cup (or touched to its edge) the motion is transmitted to the liquid inside and a vortex is created. Most vortex mixers are designed with 2 or 4-plate formats, have variable speed settings ranging from 100 to 3,200 rpm, and can be set to run continuously, or to run only when downward pressure is applied to the rubber piece.

Orbital Shakers

Types of shakers
Vortex shaker
Invented by Jack A. Kraft and Harold D. Kraft in 1962, a vortex shaker is a usually small device used to shake or mix small vials of liquid substance. Its most standout characteristic is that it works by the user putting a vial on the shaking platform and turning it on; thus, the vial is shaken along with the platform. A vortex shaker is very variable in terms of speed adjustment, for the shaking speed can be continuously changed while shaking by turning a switch.[2]

Platform shaker
A platform shaker has a table board that oscillates horizontally. The liquids to be stirred are held in beakers, jars, or erlenmeyer flasks that are placed over the table or, sometimes, in test tubes or vials that are nested into holes in the plate.[3] Platform shakers can also be combined with other systems like rotating mixers for small systems and have been designed to be manufactured in laboratories themselves with open source scientific equipment.[4]

Orbital shaker
An orbital shaker has a circular shaking motion with a slow speed (25-500 rpm). It is suitable for culturing microbes, washing blots, and general mixing. Some of its characteristics are that it does not create vibrations, and it produces low heat compared to other kinds of shakers, which makes it ideal for culturing microbes. Moreover, it can be modified by placing it in an incubator to create an incubator shaker due to its low temperature and vibrations.[5]

Digital Orbital Shaker

Incubator shaker
An incubator shaker (or thermal shaker) can be considered a mix of an incubator and a shaker. It has an ability to shake while maintaining optimal conditions for incubating microbes or DNA replications. This equipment is very useful since, in order for a cell to grow, it needs oxygen and nutrients that require shaking so that they can be distributed evenly around the culture.[6]

Incubator Shaker

Anyone employing an incubator shaker (thermal shaker) to grow yeast or bacteria in the laboratory needs to beware that under the usual conditions encountered in the lab, the rate at which oxygen diffuses from the gaseous phase into the shaken liquid phase is too slow to keep up with the rate at which the oxygen is consumed by for example E coli dividing every half hour or S cerevisiae dividing every hour. If the investigator measure the oxygen in the shake flask on the shaker — polarographically, for example — at mid-exponential phase of growth, the dissolved oxygen concentration will turn out to be zero.

Heating Mantles

A heating mantle, or isomantle, is a piece of laboratory equipment used to apply heat to containers, as an alternative to other forms of heated bath. In contrast to other heating devices, such as hotplates or Bunsen burners, glassware containers may be placed in direct contact with the heating mantle without substantially increasing the risk of the glassware shattering, because the heating element of a heating mantle is insulated from the container so as to prevent excessive temperature gradients. Heating mantles may have various forms. In a common arrangement, electric wires are embedded within a strip of fabric that can be wrapped around a flask. The current supplied to the device, and hence the temperature achieved, is regulated by a rheostat. This type of heating mantle is quite useful for maintaining an intended temperature within a separatory funnel, for example, after the contents of a reaction have been removed from a primary heat source.

Another variety of heating mantle may resemble a paint can and is constructed as a “basket” within a cylindrical canister (often made of plastic or metal such as aluminium). The rigid metal exterior supports a “basket” made of fabric and includes heating elements within the body of the heating mantle. To heat an object, it is placed within the basket of the heating mantle.

In further contrast to other methods of applying heat to a flask, such as an oil bath or water bath, using a heating mantle generates no liquid residue to drip off the flask. Also, heating mantles generally distribute heat evenly over the surface of the flask and exhibit less tendency to generate harmful hotspots.

About water activity (Aw)
Ratio of food surface water vapor pressure (P) and pure water vapor pressure (P0).[Water activity Aw = P/P0: numerical value 0 – 1].
When enclosing food in airtight containers, equilibrium relative humidity [E.R.H. % = Aw × 100] in the container.
In addition to water quantity (water content) as a physical property of food, it is used for product design, quality control and HACCP, etc.

The water contained in food is not necessarily always pure water , salts and saccharide in food composition are dissolved into the water, and protein is hydrated. Water activity is a reflection of the status of free water which is water with high fluidity that is not fixed in food and the relationship between the growthof microbes is clear.

<Lowest Water Activity for growth>

Mold: 0.80 (0.65)
Yeast: 0.88 (0.65)
Bacteria: 0.91 (0.75)
*Numerical values in brackets are: halophile, glucose tolerance, xerophilic. There is a trend of higher water activity with the increase in water content but this is not a uniform correlation.

Static Check Weighing Module

Check weighing system controls range from manual to fully automatic. A manual (static) check weighing operation requires an operator, or a mechanically automated piece of equipment, to place the item on a scale and observe Under/Accept/Over lights.

ou can use an automated check weighing process for a wide variety of applications including verifying package contents, checking product tolerances, identifying parts, classifying product and checking for overload safety. Usually the check weighing station is an inspection station after the manufacturing or packaging (Pack) process. Important reasons to use a check weighing system are increased accuracy, increased line speed, quality control, and to meet government regulations.

Check weighing system controls range from manual to fully automatic. A manual (static) check weighing operation requires an operator, or a mechanically automated piece of equipment, to place the item on a scale and observe Under/Accept/Over lights.

A fully automated system is where the item is automatically weighed in-motion. The check weight controller then directs downstream diverter gates to route product based on weight. Automated control is done by a host computers (PC), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Programmable Automation Controllers (PAC) or Distributed Control Systems (DCS) communicating with the Hardy check weighing front-end. In-motion check weighing is made possible with the Hardy WAVERSAVER® technology, which ignores plant and process mechanical vibrations such as those created by the conveyor belts.

Data Collection
In addition to verifying the weight and directing product flow, a check weighing system also provides valuable statistical information. This information can be used for SPC (Statistical Process Control) to support the requirement for quality and governmental requirements. By analyzing and feeding back the results of the check weighing operation, the source process can be adjusted to optimize product quality and lower costs.

Checkweighing Applications
Verify Package Contents
Hardy weight controllers and load cell(s)/platform scales are used to weigh packages to confirm that they have been filled to the proper level or that they contain the correct number of parts. A wide variety of products ranging from boxed food, bagged grain and glass bottles to gas cylinders can be weighed to verify the contents. Check weighing can determine whether or not the correct number of items is in a box, the right number of boxes is in a carton, and the correct number of cartons is on a pallet. For example, the beverage industry weighs kegs and canisters to make sure they are empty prior to filling and full and within tolerance after filling.

Check Product Tolerance
Checking a manufactured product’s weight verifies if it is within design tolerances. For example, an injection molding company can detect improperly produced product by using a Hardy weight controller and load point(s)/platform scale to check weigh each part as it falls out of the mold. In a coating process, the quality and thickness of the coating can be verified by the additional weight.

Classify Product
A mix of different items can be sorted by weight and diverted to the proper packaging station for classifying or grading purposes. For example, variable weight products such as fruit and vegetables can be classified or graded by their weight class using a Hardy weight controller and load point(s)/platform scale. If the check weighing process is in-motion, set points from a Hardy controller can be set to divert the product to the proper station.

Identify Parts
Items with different weights can be identified automatically by a check weighing system. For example, assembly processes use Hardy weight controllers and load point(s)/platform scales to verify the correct parts have been delivered.

Overload Safety Check
Items are often weighed to ensure they do not violate safety limits. For example, a train car is weighed with a Hardy weight controller and load point(s)/platform scale to make sure it doesn’t exceed the weight tolerance to meet interstate load requirements.
